About Balding & Beards

Let’s start at the top. Male pattern baldness and beards, which are stimulated by androgen activity, personify manliness. Most men will face balding and baldness at some point in their lives, although it can vary widely from person to person.

For some men, going bald can be the cause of much angst, and they may seek medical treatment to lessen the impact.

The flip side, however, is that many men who experience male pattern baldness have the ability to grow thick, full facial hair that is worthy of envy. Properly maintaining a beard to help it reach its full potential is something every man should consider. Like many things in a man’s life, however, a one-size-fits-all approach isn’t always going to serve your personal needs and tastes.

Let’s face it; people are visual beings, so looking your best at all times will help you feel better about yourself, enhance the way people perceive you, and even help you succeed in the many areas of your life.

I understand that men have a lot of questions when it comes to facial hair, hair loss, grooming, and style. While there’s a lot of easy-to-access information out there, none of it goes into great detail about these topics.

To go beyond basic facts to provide the latest, most detailed, and highest quality information for men who are seeking genuinely relevant answers to their questions.

If you’re looking for in-depth information on how to grow a thicker beard, we’ll have it. We’ll explain in detail many elements that go into proper beard maintenance. We understand that hair loss can be of great concern, and we’ll help you deal with it. But we don’t stop there. Want to know how to apply cologne properly? We have you covered. We’ll provide instruction for trimming your mustache the right way, and also discuss the best hair products you need to have in your grooming arsenal.

We’ll also discuss the tools of the trade when it comes to men’s grooming – from beard trimmershair clippers, and nose hair trimmers, to products such as beard oil, its ingredients, and how it’s made. Hair and body care don’t just stop there, so neither will we. We’ll offer reviews of the best combsbody groomers, and more. We understand that proper grooming involves a whole-body approach in which no stone should be left unturned.

While many of our product reviews are geared toward men, our information on hair loss usually contains information for both sexes.

Affiliate Disclosure: We’ll regularly review and compare products related to facial hairhair loss, and men’s grooming. The reviews will contain links from affiliate links — mostly notably Amazon — from which we receive a small commission. We also make money through Google ads. You can read more about it on our privacy policy page. We’re open and honest about where our money comes from. While we’ll always be grateful if you buy through our affiliate links, we’ll never pressure you to do so.

You can also be assured that we put a lot of time and effort into researching all of the products we review, and in the vast majority of cases, we’ve either used the product and/or continue to use it today.

As men, we like to have fun, too, and we’ll often take a light-hearted – yet still informative – approach to what we write for this website.

Balding & Beards is updated with new articles about two times each month, and our existing guides and product reviews are updated regularly. Our goal is to provide men with the latest and most relevant and recent information available.

We also run a footwear resource website Footwear Ox – another obsession of ours. If you care about your feet, be sure to check it out.

I have also partnered up with Jordan Sully in a natural, eco-friendly brand ZELEN Life. If you are interested in premium organic products for sensitive (and normal) skin, you should check it out.

  • Hi Domen,
Just want to really commend you for the amazing work on your website. We at Travel-Gentlemen have seen numerous websites that do reviews of products and accessories for men but yours really stand out for its relatable and authoritative content. Just to find a site that really discusses hair and grooming for men in such great depth is fantastic.
We recently reviewed best beard trimmers for men on our website. We highlighted what we like about the Remington TouchTech Beard Trimmer just like you did one yours. Your post on beard trimmers and how to use the beard trimmers compared to other devices is truly insightful. There’s so much for every consumer to learn from you.
Thank you for the inspiration and keep up the great work!!

  • I’m looking to buy my husband a good grooming kit for his birthday. He has a full grizzly-Adams beard that he likes to keep trimmed up. He shaves his head bald. And he shaves his back. I’d like to get him set up for under $100 with a kit (or putting pieces together) to give him something solid and useful for something he maintains daily. Any suggestions?

  • Great, informative website and thank you. Wear my hair a 1 on top and a close skin fade. Looking to maintain a five o’clock shadow stubble effect for side burns, mustache and under chin. Any grooming recommendations for this look? Thanks, Ken C

    • Get the right tool for the job – a stubble trimmer. And perhaps keep your goatee a tiny bit longer compared to other stubble.

  • Just recently discovered this website and it seems a excellent one for the liking of me who has wanted and could have grown a beard since I was 18 but was never allowed to, yes I was never really a strong willed person. At first it was my parents who always sent me back to the bathroom if I missed at the most 2 days without shaving saying I looked like a “beachcomber”, scruffy and unkempt, so I just had to shave and that was that. When I got married if I did not shave twice a day my wife would refuse ‘ you know what’ at night, saying my face was like a ‘hedgehog’ so it was a shave at 7am and also at about 9pm as well.
Sadly my wife died just over 5 years ago and it was only then that I have attempted not to shave for about 8 or 9 days in a row, however, that dreaded itch made me shave it off after that time UNTIL I read this website asking men to persevere the itch and continue with the beard. I have achieved that and I am now almost month without shaving, I feel great, my daughter likes my new look as well, in fact I might never shave again, one can never say never, medical reasons might make me have to shave but up to now at the age of 68 I have always had good health. Its very evenly spread all over my face from the lower neck where there are many hairs spreading up from my hairy chest to just under my eyes and my mustache is thick as well with no break spreading on to my face, a full beard is what I want and it seems is what I am getting. The only problem I have had is a few hairs from my mustache getting into my mouth when I am eating but I have been advised by I think one of your staff Domen to comb it sideways, yes I have done that and the hair is NOT going into my mouth. Like to go a yeard or MORE without trimming (forget the word shaving) BUT if it really gets like Rasputin I might have to trim a bit, not sure if I would like my beard to be more than 8 or 9 inches IF it does do that, have to wait and see what happens in my personal beard journey.
